Don’t make Nintendo Angry. You wouldn’t like them when they’re angry.
Earlier in January Nintendo felt like a kid waking up early on Christmas morning. Nintendo obtained the patent portfolio of IA Labs, a company that sued the big N in 2010 for patent infringement. IA is probably most known for the technology they claim Nintendo infringed upon for the Wii Balance Board. Nintendo obtained the portfolio during a sheriff’s sale of IA Labs. Nintendo won/defended the claim in court and the court ruled in their favor in February 2012 and won in appeals court in June 2013. IA Labs was ordered to pay Nintendo’s appeals costs. IA never paid the amount and thus had their property sold off.
“Nintendo’s track record demonstrates that we vigorously defend patent lawsuits, like the IA Labs lawsuit, when we believe we have not infringed another party’s patent. This includes holding those who sue Nintendo responsible for the costs and expenses incurred in patent litigation,” said Richard Medway, Nintendo of America’s vice president and deputy general counsel. “Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others.”
