Fans of Capcom's upcoming F2P title Deep Down can check out some new info and a new trailer as well.

Capcom is working hard to make sure gamers remain hyped for their upcoming free-to-play action RPG Deep Down as we shift into a new year of gaming.

In a recent interview with Famitsu, Sony and Capcom shared a few new tidbits of info regarding Deep Down’s unique gameplay and mechanics. A new weapon type, the large and powerful two-handed greatsword, was revealed, joining the already known spear and sword/shield types. The developer and publisher also talked about how each dungeon’s aesthetic look will be more than just cosmetic; players will be able to harness different kinds of “mementos” from different dungeons based on their aesthetics and will be able to use those mementos to upgrade their weapons and armor in unique ways.

Sony and Capcom are also taking a page from the Dark Souls handbook, with asynchronous multiplayer that actually allows one player to help another simply by being defeated by a dungeon’s monstrous inhabitants. According to Capcom, when a player in Deep Down is killed in a dungeon, a “copy” of their corpse will appear in other players’ games if they happen to be exploring the same dungeon. Looting these corpses can grant other players valuable supplies and gear, so if you do happen to bite the dust while fending off a ravenous pack of beasties or facing down a humongous dragon, you can take some small comfort that your death wasn’t in vain (at least for other players).

A new trailer and tidbit of story info helps to bridge the narrative gap between the game’s modern day scenes and the gameplay which focuses more on medieval fantasy archetypes:

“The stage of the story is New York in 2094. A member of the Ravens with the ability to read the residual thoughts that dwell on items earns his livings by clarifying the story from archaeological sites of ancient cultures. At one point in an excavation in the Czech Republic some ruins from the late 15th century are found. The presence of a mysterious city and the memories of an ancient civilization can be found in the site. The hero receives the request to investigate the ruins and to read its memories.”

Deep Down is currently set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 4 sometime in early 2014.
