With Halloween this week, what better way to drill up excitement than looking at some of the ghostly happenings from Nintendo?
Other games in the Nintendo universe have had ghost-like activity in one way or another. The Legend of Zelda has always had a graveyard to wonder through as well as ghosts to deal with. Ocarina of time had Dampe the grave keeper that you had to follow to get your hands on the Hookshot as well as the Shadow Temple in that same graveyard and Bongo Bongo to fight in said Shadow Temple. There was also the spirit to follow in the Gerudo Valley to get to the Spirit Temple. The whole Dark World is like a ghostly version of the land of Hyrule. Ghosts are things that are unexplained and since the Zelda series is similar to medieval times, paranormal instances weren’t understood then as well.
Donkey Kong Country and Star Fox have had their paranormal run-ins as well. First, in Donkey Kong Country 2, Diddy and Dixie had to get through the haunted roller coaster ride, dealing with Kackle as well as the whole Gloomy Gulch level. Gloomy Gulch had several haunted levels as well as Kreepy Krow, the ghost of Krow. Another spooky boss fight was with Kleever, the skull blade of Crocodile Cauldron. You’ll have to be very courageous to deal with all the spooks that the Kong family has to deal with to save Donkey Kong.
Star Fox 64 shows the origin of Fox McCloud’s father James’s flight team and the untimely demise of Fox’s father. After the Andross fight on Venom, you follow your “father” all the way out of the exploding planet. He was presumed dead for all those years until he helps you escape Venom, much to the surprise of Fox McCloud. I think it shocked a lot of people when you saw another ship flying past on the way out of Venom and it turns out it’s your father.
To recap, Nintendo deals a lot in the realm of ghosts and goblins. From the Super Mario series and the Boos, to various ghost Pokemon. Players will have to think on their feet to deal with a quickly approaching Boo or finding the secret exit of the Ghost House. You don’t really think about how much of the “paranormal” is in your favorite games and how much fun they are to deal with and get through.
Enjoy the games everyone and Happy Halloween!
