Newzoo has discovered that a global gaming audience is bypassing Nintendo DS, 3DS and Sony PSP and PS Vita in favor of Apple iPad Mini.
“The device is cool,” said Peter Warman, CEO Newzoo. “What surprises me is the price. I realize that Apple is caught in between pricing of the iPod Touch and the iPad and the fact that they keep selling the iPad 2 doesn’t make things easier. I think Apple missed a great opportunity to restructure pricing for all their products. Now they are leaving the door wide open for Google, Samsung and especially Amazon. Amazon is rolling out their business in price-sensitive Europe at an enormous pace. Even if they had lowered pricing of their total product range with only $20 per device that would have given the Apple brand an enormous boost in terms of sympathy amongst consumers that are facing a serious recession.”
The research performed in September involved 10,000 invitation-only respondents. It is part of a larger consumer research effort involving a total of 33,000 respondents across key Western and Emerging markets. Awareness and buying intention formed only two of over 200 topics investigated. Topics of this batch of research were determined by Newzoo’s clients including Kabam, Plantronics, SEGA, Incomm, GlobalCollect, GREE, Blizzard, SpilGames, GameHouse and Microsoft. More results related to smartphone and tablet gaming will be part of Newzoo’s upcoming free Mobile Trend Report, featuring a combination of consumer and transactional data.
