As it happens, it didn't take long for Square Enix to change their stance on Deus Ex: The Fall's compatibility for jailbroken devices.

Update: In the wake of Reddit compaints from users who purchased the game but were unable to play on their jailbroken devices, Square Enix has released an official statement saying that they'll remove the non-jailbreak requirement from Deus Ex: The Fall in an upcoming update:

"We have not been clear in our communication earlier this week when we launched Deus Ex: The Fall. We did not state clearly that the game would not support jailbroken devices and so we will be switching this off via an update, so that all the supported iOS devices will be able to play the game in the near future. We feel it's the right thing to do in this situation and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. No customer should be out of pocket when we were not clear from the start, so we'll get the game updated as soon as possible so that everyone who wants to play Deus Ex: The Fall can do regardless of whether their device is jailbroken or not. As soon as this update is live we will communicate this via the Eidos Montreal Community channels"

It's good that Square Enix admited their mistake and are working to fix it. Hopefully other developers and publishers will remember this moment when considering similar heavy-handed anti-piracy policies.

Originial Story: If you were planning on using a jailbroken iOS device to play Square Enix’s new mobile game Deus Ex: The Fall, you might want to reconsider before you head on over to the iTunes store.

Several Reddit users who have been playing games with “jailbroken” (acquired without getting a carrier contract) iOS devices have reported that an in-game window pops up while playing which informs them that guns are inoperable on jailbroken devices. Since firing a gun is a required part of the game’s opening tutorial, Deus Ex: The Fall is basically unplayable on jailbroken devices.

This precaution was no doubt an attempt by Square Enix to combat piracy of the game but many Reddit users are still very upset since, despite using jailbroken devices, they still opted to pay the game’s $7 price tag. Hopefully Square Enix will relax the jailbreaking restrictions on Deus Ex: The Fall soon since past history has proven that such heavy-handed anti-piracy measures almost always do more harm than good.
