A new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 can restore consoles that were affected by last week's 4.45 update.

Last week, the 4.45 system software update Sony released for the PlayStation 3 ended up doing a lot more harm than good, even going so far as to render many consoles completely inoperable (what many referred to as “bricking” the console since after the update, the PS3 was basically a giant plastic brick). Fortunatly, firmware update 4.46 has come to the rescue and Sony has detailed how affected users can use the update to “unbrick” their consoles.

If you didn’t happen to download update 4.45 last week, then you should be good to go. If you are one of the affected users however, you’ll need a USB drive for this next part. Sony has detailed the process of restoring bricked consoles on their PlayStation support webpage which involves downloading the 4.46 update onto a USB device (an external hard drive or thumb drive are two good options), booting your PS3 up in safe mode, and installing the update through the USB.

Full details can be found at the PlayStation support page using the link below.
