Microsoft has spent quite a pretty penny to make sure their online and cloud computing services are top notch.

Microsoft is plunking down $700 Million to help expand its data center in West Des Moines, Iowa through a project their calling “Project Mountain.”

So what does this mean for Xbox players? Well, one of the Iowa data center’s chief functions includes supporting Xbox Live and it isn’t too far-fetched to imagine it will also be used to maintain the Xbox One’s cloud computing capabilities when the console is released later this year.

Thanks to their investment, Microsoft now owns about 40 acres of land in West Des Moines and the number of employees currently working at their Iowa data center is expected to rise from its current 50 to 75 or even higher. Microsoft isn’t the only company buying up Iowa property either as they are rubbing elbows with other big online companies like Facebook and Google.

Only time will tell how this affects the Xbox One’s launch but it can only mean good news for current Xbox Live users.
