Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto offered his candid thoughts on the F-Zero franchise during E3.

In an E3 interview with IGN, famed Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto admitted that he has no clear answers in regards to the fate of the beloved Nintendo sci-fi racing franchise F-Zero.

During the interview, Miyamoto made it clear that he understands fans want a new F-Zero game but that he has been struggling with what exactly Nintendo could do to reinvigorate the series so that it would work on current consoles:

"I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game. I think where I struggle is that I don't really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again. Certainly I can see how people looking at Mario Kart 8 could see, through the anti-gravity, a connection to F-Zero. But I don't know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero."

Miyamoto’s reference to Mario Kart 8 is in regards to the new hover-magnet capabilities that will allow kart racers in Mario Kart 8 to race along walls and even upside down on certain tracks; a hallmark that has “F-Zero” written all over it.

The last F-Zero game to be released was F-Zero Climax which came out way back in 2004 but was only released in Japan. The last F-Zero game to be released state-side was F-Zero GX which came out roughly ten years ago for the Nintendo GameCube. Given these dates, it’s understandable that fans would be ravenous for a new F-Zero title, but sadly it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing the series that gave us Captain Falcon making a return any time soon.
