Bethesda has opened up about Prey 2 and why exactly they've put it on hold as long as they have.

The long and sordid tale of Prey 2, sequel to the 2006 sleeper-hit Prey, has taken another turn with Bethesda’s Vice President of Public Relations Pete Hines confirming that the game was an internal disappointment but that it isn’t necessarily gone for good.

During an E3 interview with IGN, Hines spoke candidly about Prey 2 and some of the struggles both Bethesda and developer Human Head Studios faced during its development:

“We appreciate that folks are displeased that we haven’t had any update or any info on Prey 2, but whatever your displeasure is, you can’t even be remotely as unhappy about it as us. We spent years and millions of dollars and a ton of effort trying to help Human Head make a great Prey 2 game. What we said the last time we said anything was that it’s not up to our quality standards."

Hines also made it perfectly clear that the decision to keep holding Prey 2 back was one born out of a desire to deliver a great gaming experience, not out of an aversion to the series:

“What is the chance that we have some amazing, unbelievable game and we’re just not talking about it for no reason? Zero. This is a business. We do have bills to pay and people to employ. They have families that they would like to provide for. You don’t just keep throwing money at something or going down a path that you’re not happy about.”

Recent rumors have suggested that Arkane Studios, the developer behind last year’s Dishonored, may have taken over the reins for Prey 2 and are even rebuilding the entire game from the ground up but until those rumors can be confirmed or denied, all Prey 2 fans have to go on is Hines’ bittersweet yet candid statement.
