Nintendo has officially announced the next entry in the popular Mario Kart series titled Mario Kart 8.

During their Nintendo Direct E3 event this morning, Nintendo debuted a trailer for their new Mario Kart game Mario Kart 8 which is set to be released for the Wii U console sometime next year.

Clever fans will notice that the “8” in the game’s logo and title also doubles as the infamous Mobius Strip; a topographical image that is meant to challenge a viewer’s conventional thoughts of top and bottom which is oddly appropriate given some of the game’s new mind-bending gimmicks.

In addition to some returning features like motorcycles and hang-gliders, vehicles in Mario Kart 8 will now sport magnets which allow players to race along walls and even upside down. Certain tracks will even feature “dual-tracks” in which some racers might be zipping along ride side up while others will be just below racing along upside down.

Players will be able to use standard analog controls or all-new motion controls utilizing the Wii U game pad’s built in gyroscopic features. The game pad itself will double as a minimap and in-game horn as well.

Nintendo was mum on specifics such as how many different courses and playable characters there’d be or what new powerups (if any) would be available to use but hopefully fans won’t have to wait too long before they pull the Mario Kart 8 curtain back completely.
