After closing down LucasArts, Disney has licensed the Star Wars franchise to EA for new games.
Specific games haven’t been revealed, but hopefully the almost-complete Battlefront 3 game will be released. And perhaps the Star Wars 1313 that wowed press at E3 last year from LucasArts. With new Star Wars movies coming every year beginning in 2015, there will be plenty of new content to bring to the game space.
EA has shied away from Hollywood licensed games since Harry Potter, having explored licenses like The Lord of the Rings, Superman, Catwoman, The Godfather and James Bond in the past. Star Wars is a different beast, and I’m looking forward to seeing what DICE can bring to the multiplayer Star Wars arena. BioWare and Visceral have had success in the sci-fi genre with Mass Effect and Dead Space, although BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic failed to explode online.
Things are looking good for Star Wars with director JJ Abrams set to direct Episode VII. Now the Force could also be strong in the video game space -- even without LucasArts involved. The studios have a full two years to work on any new Star Wars games, which should be plenty of time.
