Check out this cool VR game at PAX East!

For those who don’t know, Day Four is the final day at PAX East. I always have a great time at the convention, getting to see all the cool games/toys/etc. The last day started with a stop at a Virtual Reality game, Heroes Together VR. I’m not the biggest VR guy in the world, but this game was crazy fun!

Heroes Together VR is a co-op virtual reality game where you and three other people grab a headset and fight for a common goal. That common goal is to defeat all the enemies and make your way to the end. One of the better features in the game was that you didn’t need a balanced team in terms of classes. If you all wanted to be the same class, you could be. I was a Knight that had a sword to attack. You swung your remotes to do damage. The bigger the swing, the more damage you did. The archer attacked enemies with a bow and arrow. Think Wii Sports Resort bow and arrow shooting, where you have to pull out an arrow and then pull back to aim and shoot. The Fighter attacked with his bare hands. I went with the Knight because he felt like the easiest to control, and I didn’t have to worry about aiming too much.

Another cool feature was that you could talk to your team mates similar to team-speak. At the start, it was tough to hear everyone, and there was a slight delay, but when we got into gameplay, it was like we all knew each other and could tell someone where to go. Enemies could be in front, behind, or above, so good communication was key. There were body gestures that you could do to strengthen your team for a limited time. They were a little tough to master, but when you did the motion correctly, you felt a vibration. You would have your weapon in one hand and nothing in the other. If you had an empty hand, you could pick up potions/bottles with that hand and use it. I love that you have to bring the potion to your mouth to drink it. It also felt like there was no “friends fire” damage because we were close to each other a few times attacking skeletons. You could bump into teammates while moving but the locations weren’t super massive so that wasn’t a big deal. There were two ways to move ingame. You could use the control stick to move in direction or point the control stick to move a target to show where you want to go. Then you would teleport to the next spot.

There was a young kid in the group before me and I was glad he wasn’t in our group. He was really good at the game and was telling everyone how to do everything and where to go. He would have been yelling at me the whole time if we were teammates. I’m not super familiar with VR games so I was glad that I didn’t die in battle AND I wasn’t the weak link. Overall Heroes Together VR is a great time and a fun thing to do with a few friends. I’m looking forward to seeing it further down the road in development.
