Check out the Standing Cat booth!
My next appointment during PAX East was at the Standing Cat booth. Keeping with the feline theme, I was there to check out their game, Nekomancer of Nowhere. You play the role of the Nekomancer, who is a cat-like wizard who is tasked with solving the mystery of Tombstone Tower..
I feel like if Nekomancer of Nowhere was made during the Nintendo DS/3DS time, it would fit right in on that system. The reason why I feel that way is because the main control scheme of the game is drawing spells on the screen to revive ghosts you find in the tower. You’ll also be able to flip the screen and maneuver through the level to get to the other side. You have to revive all the ghosts in the level to unlock the door and then make your way over to it. This style reminds me a lot of the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with the Dark World being similar to the light world. It also reminded me of the Castlevania games on DS with being able to draw on screen for special moves.
There are darker tones in the game with the likes of death and hell being front and center. The levels aren’t too big so you’ll be able to see everything going on. You’ll get more backstory on the ghosts in what feels like a waiting area pin the tower. You’ll get to hear their stories as well as find out just what happened to them.
I really like the fact that the tower has different style of levels. One level was a black-and-white 1930’s cartoon like level where another one was green and creepy. I also like the fact that there are different ghosts in the tower that need more strength to revive. I believe it started with bird ghosts and then we found walrus ghosts. Controls are simple enough that you right-click ghosts to stun and then find out their symbol and draw it. If the game eventually gets to use a controller because I hate keyboard/mouse, I think the game will be even better.
