She's a Witch!

It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time, we're looking at Quantum Witch on Steam. Usually there is commentary on the hands-on but there were issues this time so my apologies.

Quantum Witch has an old school platformer feel to it with a modern twist. You play the role of Ren who lives with her partner, Tyra. They look like the ideal couple but without spoiling too much, they get separated and it's up to Ren to save the day. Along the journey, you will discover magic and that magic will help you get through adversity. The game feels pretty story heavy so be prepared for plenty of reading, which isn't a bad thing. One of the funnier moments was when we have to enter a building that looks like a cult. The cult adamantly denies they're a cult and then when we call them out for it, we get kicked out for saying its a cult. Then when we go back and show we didn't die from their actions, we become the new god and thus the new face of the cult. That's a thinking man's joke and I really appreciated it. I also loved the references to classic video game characters like Pac Man and Princess Peach in the village. I really like that the Princess was selling turtle shells. There was a lot of going back and forth through the village and if the village was bigger, that would have been a huge pain. There were times where you had to start a quest on one end of town, find part of it, then go back to your house and sleep to progress time, and then finish the quest. I don't usually mind things like that but it was a little much.

Leaning a magic spell that allows you to progress between foreground and background on platforms is really cool. However, it was really tough at times to see what you could actually jump on. In terms of the demo, I was in an area that should have been able to progress with the magic but had no options. Maybe I was doing something wrong but it felt like I was not able to progress. The writing in Quantum Witch is clever and funny. There are issues in the game that if fixed, could make the game very fun.
