Check out what Chromatic Games brought to PAX!

PAX East is all about getting to see independent developers get their shot at showing off their projects. I was able to schedule time to sit down at the Chromatic Games booth to see their game, Dungeon Defenders: Going Rouge. During the hands on I was eating some Italian Ice and the game still kept my interest so let’s get to it.

Defend the dungeons at all costs! That’s really all you need to know to succeed in Dungeon Defenders: Going Rouge. You can pick from one of five fighters to start and you’ll have to be thinking at all times during the quest to get the best build. Not getting the best skills will make things pretty tough for you as wave after wave of enemy forces come at you.

If you’re thinking, you can set things up for a counter attack like having the enemy forces go up the stairs and you getting them stuck on the railing of said stairs. You’ll also have the ability to grab better weapons and special attacks after enemy waves. You’ll see a treasure chest and that chest should have upgrades that should make things easier for you. Like most games like this, you’ll have the ability to use special attacks but will have to wait for cool-down to be able to use them again. That’s just another way you’ll have to use strategy to success in battle. If you let the forces get too close or too strong, you might have a tough time if you have to wait for the cool-down to replenish.

One issue I had while playing was that it felt like the action/waves of enemies moved a bit slow for my liking. It felt like at times, there were plenty of enemies to deal with and then there were times I felt like I was waiting a bit for the next wave. It also felt like the map was a little tough to read and that shouldn’t have been the case as the locations weren’t that big to begin with.

Being able to customize your build and unlock new features/attacks during gameplay is always fun as it forces you to be quick on your feet. The role-playing game elements give that custom element a shot in the arm. That being said, fans of the dungeon crawlers will want to give Dungeon Defenders: Going Rogue a look.
