Retro to the max!
The Penny Arcade Expo is all about the little guy and indie developers and Mega Cat Studios personifies that to the letter. For those who aren’t aware, Mega Car develops games for classic consoles like the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis and puts their own creative spin on them, which is really cool. It’s great to see developers creating games for old school consoles.
I was able to get some hands on time with one of their newest creations for the Sega Genesis, Lethal Wedding. Lethal Wedding has you dealing with your special day as well as clowns that ruin that special day. This role-playing shooter allows you to play as the bride or the mother-in-law to save the day. You will have all kinds of clown-activity coming at you and you’ll have to think on your feet to quell the situation.
You will have various guns at your disposal to work with as well some interesting weapons that you can pick up along the way. One stage has you shooting rabbits out of a magician’s hat at enemies but you can run out of ammo pretty quickly so be prepared.
The game is a top down RPG/Shooter so it will remind you of the Legend of Zelda, if Zelda was played on the Sega Genesis. Controls for the game were pretty straightforward and felt like you could pick up and play right away. There was a room that you just had to survive in but there wasn’t anything to tell you that as the rest of the game has you going through the veiled doors as quick as possible and then this room doesn’t have anything like that. It would have been nice to have some kind of intro like “survive and advance” or something to tell you that this level was different than the others, no real big deal but it would have been nice to see.
Lethal Wedding, for the Sega Genesis, that’s right I said the Sega comes from the creative minds at Mega Cat Studios. Grab the best weapons and take the clowns down with the bride-to-be and the mother-in-law!
