Sony Santa Monica Studios has lifted the lid off the campaign for God of War: Ascension in this exclusive interview.

Sony Santa Monica Studios has lifted the lid off the campaign for God of War: Ascension in this exclusive interview. Jason McDonald, lead combat designer on the prequel, talks about what’s in store for fans with the latest Kratos adventure in this exclusive interview.

How does the Super Bowl commercial explore Kratos’ backstory?

It shows what is tormenting him all the games including this game which the killing of his wife and daughter. It shows the affect it has on him and this game, in particular, shows what he was before he became very angry in God of War 1, 2 and 3.

What opportunities do you see with this character with Universal adapting it into a movie?

I have no idea what’s going on with a movie, but if there was a movie it would be awesome.

They did announce that they were writing it right now.

Yeah, I know there’s something going on with that but other than the fact there is a movie, I don’t know anything else.

What did going back in time with this prequel open up for your team?

It allowed us to explore a different side of Kratos. With every God of War, Kratos just get angrier and angrier and kills everything in his path. This time we can actually show a Kratos who doesn’t do that. He actually tries to help people once in a while.

What’s it like introducing the story and the campaign for the first time?

It’s very exciting to show the single player. We’ve been showing multiplayer all year long and this is the opening level of our game and we’re very proud of what we’re showing.

What were your goals heading into this title?

The goal from the comic perspective was to freshen up the experience. We’ve had three God of Wars on the consoles before. Kratos’ abilities have stacked on top of each other, so this is a time we can go back and change how he works a little bit.
