See who took home the title!
In case you missed it, last night saw an epic finale for the Madden 17 Championship, wrapping up the season in spectacular fashion. Michael “Skimbo” Skimbo vanquished Eric “Problem” Wright 24 – 20 to lay claim to the first ever Madden Championship, as well as $100,000 in prize money. After a low-scoring first half Skimbo held a 10 – 6 lead at halftime, but once the 2nd half began the fireworks started. In the 3rd quarter Problem used one of his patented, methodical drives down the field to put points on the board and take a 13 – 10 lead. Skimbo answered with a touchdown of his own, but his lead was quickly erased when Problem took the ensuing kickoff to the house and reclaimed the lead 20 – 17. By the midway point of the 4th quarter it looked like Skimbo’s run of bad luck in Majors would continue, as he would once again make the finals only to come up short. However, a long bomb to Demariyus Thomas put Skimbo back on top, and for once he was able to hold on, fending off a furious last-second drive by Problem, sealing the victory by knocking down a pass in the endzone as time expired.
Skimbo’s story all season long was one of heartbreak, making the finals in every Major but never being able to break through with a victory, until now. They say that to be the best you have to beat the best, and that’s exactly what he did by taking down Problem in the biggest event of the year. After coming so close so many times he officially earns a notch in the win column, and now has an entire offseason to think about what it means to defend his belt when the field comes gunning for him next season.
Now for Problem the question is what becomes of the man who many have called the G.O.A.T.? After a series where he struggled to make the finals in any Major, he had a chance to cement his legacy by winning the Madden Championship, but he came up short. Will he be back for another shot at glory next year, or has his time passed?
As the book closes on season one the storylines are already taking shape for season two. More details and specifics will be revealed soon, but for now thanks for a great year and congrats to Michael “Skimbo” Skimbo, the Madden Champion!
