The Wii U is selling better than the Wii did in the same time frame.

It would appear that the Wii U is doing better than the Wii did in terms of sales through the first six weeks of its existence. The Wii U has sold more than 460,000 units during the month of December and 890,000 units in the United States during the first 41 days on the market. That means the Wii U has generated 300+ million dollars in the US. Contrast that with the Wii, which only generated 270+ million dollars in the same point of existence. Now don’t get me wrong, 270 million is still a Hell of a lot of money, but it isn’t Wii U money.

“While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013. We look forward to offering great new experiences and bringing smiles to millions of new faces throughout the year.”

2012 was the 11th year in a row where Nintendo sold at least 8 million units in the United States. The popularity of New Super Mario Brother U, which sold 580,000 units, had a lot to do with that sales figure. Nintendo has continued to ride the popularity of their systems. The 3DS has sold 7.7 million units and the Wii is up to 40.8 billion units sold. That’s quite an impressive number. It looks like Nintendo will be around for even more years to come.
