This time you should think inside the box!

I was able to attend IndieCade at this year’s E3 and one of games shown off was from a company called Loot Interactive. It would appear that Loot’s area of expertise is “flash style” games. What I mean by that is games that allow for short bursts of gameplay, similar to online flash games. One of the games Loot Interactive has that does this is called Back to Bed but this review isn’t about that, this review is about another quick hitter, Velocibox!

The game starts out by giving you the generic “if you suffer from seizures” warning so you don’t really know what to expect when you first start out. All you can figure out from that is there is going to be a lot of action on the screen at one time and a lot of flashing lights, thus the seizure warnings.

The controls are easy enough to pick up and play but you will find yourself dying again and again. However, the more times I died, the more times I wanted to try and get further along in the stage. Once you start playing, you have a tough time putting the game down; the addiction factor is very high.

As I mentioned before, the controls are very simple but will take some practice time to achieve anything. The action on screen comes at you so quickly that even if you know what you want to do, you still might mess it up. As you make your way through the game, you can start at any level that you unlock.. The further you make it in the game, the tougher the puzzles get and the faster the action gets, which will add to the toughness of the game.

This game will put your reflexes to the test and you’ll be rewarded with trophies to unlock for the PlayStation 4. However, even the sharpest reflexes might not be enough to save you in this game, as you just won’t know how to advance. That’s the fun part of playing each level over and over and finally figuring out how to get past something or finally unlocking that next level.

Combine the level of achievement when you finally beat a level with the challenge of the leaderboard mode and you have yourself one tough test. The leaderboard mode is exactly what it sounds like, you putting your skills to the test online and best score is the best! The game is tough already but putting your reputation on the line as a game player raises the stakes even more.  Being the best of the best will take a lot but it will mean something too.

Velocibox for the PlayStation 4 is a tough, fast-paced puzzle game that will test your reflexes. You will need all of your skills to get anywhere in this game and you will die, a lot! The gameplay value, game addiction value, and the level of achievement will make the game all worthwhile in the end! It might not feel like progress but making strides in challenging games is their own reward. It’s these reasons that I’m giving Velocibox for the PS4 an 8.5/10.

Score: 8.5 / 10
