The cast helps beef up an otherwise predictable story.  And Bruce Willis.

When the original Red came out in 2010, it did a fine job of recreating the DC Comic of the same name, focusing on a group of retired CIA and other operatives caught in a whirlwind plot sometimes outside their reach.  Still, despite their age, they got the job done, and had a lot of fun doing it.

Red 2, the follow-up which comes three years later, fares about the same.  Some of the magic is lost with some key players – namely Karl Urban and Morgan Freeman – missing from the line-up.  However, some newbies pick up the slack, and most of the key cast returns, having fun with a mostly typical plot and making it more enjoyable than it deserves.  It's a breezy sequel, if not one that'll be remembered as fondly as those that improve on the brand.

When we catch up with Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) and his girlfriend Sarah (Mary Louise Parker), they're getting used to a quiet life, shopping for groceries at the local mart.  However, the kooky Marvin (John Malkovich), reappears, explaining that trouble is coming.  And he isn't kidding.  It turns out that an older operation called Nightshade has been reactivated, forcing Frank to reassemble his team and act fast, or possibly die faster.
