With a game title like Puzzle Pirates, you would expect a game filled with fun and challenging puzzles with a unique pirate feel. While SEGA does not have the best track record with games (how many times until they get Sonic right?), GamerHub TV was still willing to approach this game with a open mind. I mean, we enjoy puzzles and pirates so this should be an instant win. Read the review to find out why we were so terribly disappointed.
Puzzle Pirates is a disappointment in gaming. It is another black mark on SEGA’s once impressive record. The game labels itself as an “immersive experience” that allows you to take on the role of a pirate. In reality, it forces you to take on the role of a frustrated gamer that constantly regrets the download. You begin the game creating a pirate with basic customization options that must have been scraped from the bottom of the ocean. Then, you travel islands in search of treasure chests. Once you solve the puzzles you gain the treasure inside. The puzzles however are another anchor that is holding this game down.
The puzzles in the game are not unique at all. They are just re-skinned versions of games like Bejeweled. The touch controls are stiff and sometimes unresponsive. You will leave trenches on your iPad from tapping and swiping in a vain attempt to solve the puzzles. Also, there is normally no indication on screen telling you the requirements to solving the puzzle. You are left stuck, continuing to solve the puzzle until you are left screaming parlay. PARLAY!
The anchor dropped on Puzzle Pirates before it left shore. The game attempts to be a hybrid RPG with puzzle and ship building elements. Instead, it is a frustrating experience that will have you begging for someone to release the Kraken. Not only should Puzzle Pirates never be downloaded, it should be buried deep on a cursed island never to be played again. Oh wait, it already was. The island is called SEGA, where great concepts go to die. Now, I am going to go play Aleins: Colonial Marines. Wait, does that say SEGA on the box? GAME OVER MAN!
