Police corruption, mafia ties, and a hostage situation. These are not the typical things you expect to find at the local diner. This is however the setting for Pawn. This attempt at a tense crime thriller stars Forest Whitaker, Common, Michael Chiklis, Sean Farris, and Ray Liotta. With the quality of actors in this film, Pawn had the potential to tell a very compelling story. Instead, the performances are squandered away on a mediocre script, predictable moments, and ridiculous decisions. Does Pawn still find it’s positioning? Find out in our review.
Whitaker's short performance is great in this film.
The plot of Pawn begins very tense. A cop, played by Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker, walks into a diner at the end of his shift. Everyone in the diner seems still and terrified. An employee at the diner gives signals that something is not right. The plot then begins to spin into a small set of intertwining stories that attempts to excite the viewer while never delivering. The pace of the story is its only saving grace as the plot holes and ridiculous decisions made by the thieves in the diner are irredeemable. This attempt at forced drama and character connection through different stories has been done before and has definitely been done better. Thankfully, a short run time and a few standout performances save this from being a total disaster.
