Admidst all of the recent Mech games, Hawken rises to conquer all.

It feels like in the past year and a half many Mech games have resurfaced. From the 90’s-2000’s classic MechWarrior to a Japanese clone of Shogo. Only In late 2012 we got a new player on the humanoid vehicular battlefield: Hawken.

Hawken, developed by Adhesive Games is a beautiful Online First Person Shooter that incorporates a true free-to-play style, that means no hidden costs, massive perks to paying members, or pressure to buy. This, coupled with a fantastic community have scored it a ton of well-deserved awards.

The gameplay of Hawken strikes a note right away with the simple game modes available for people who are new to online multiplayer games. Currently there are 4 game modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Siege and Missile Assault.

Deathmatch is your standard free for all, slayer, grindhouse: whatever your vocabulary of choice it’s very simple. No one is your friend. Everyone is your enemy. Deathmatch is where much of my Hawken game time was spent. You have to be quick, alert and have a good control scheme. Team Deathmatch is similar except there teams, very simple.

Siege and Missile Assault are where the Hawken specific characteristics really come into play, mainly being community and strategy. Missile Assault involves controlling and defending 3 missile silos (Like Domination) which will eventually be shot at the opponent’s base, winning you the game.. Siege mode is a little more complicated. Its objective based where you and your teammates must collect Energy Units and supply your base with the collected energy in order to power your battleship, which is sent toward the enemy base. Controlling the anti-air units is essential to helping your battleship survive the trip, or to stopping an opponent’s battleship from reaching your own base. The first team to destroy their opponent’s base wins.
