Find out how Telltale games put their spin on the Caped Crusader!
The last appointment of the Electronics and Entertainment Expo for this year went to one of my favorite franchises. I had heard good things before I set foot inside Wayne Manner at Telltale Games and I was ready to see their take on the Caped Crusader, Batman!
Let’s get some house keeping out of the way early, August 1st is when the first episode is supposed to launch to the masses. This is going to be a brand new story being told by Telltale Games and It will be very interesting to see how they handle the Batman franchise. Telltale is very good at telling a story and that should translate well to Batman!
One thing that was made clear in the presentation is that Bruce Wayne is just as important to the series as Batman is. Batman is all about action but his personal life, that’s all Bruce Wayne. You’ll have action scenes while playing as Batman like apprehending crooks and fighting Catwoman by different control stick motions and button combos. The art style and controls are reminiscent of Tales From The Borderlands, where storytelling and decision-making are key to your success!
The story appears to be early on in Bruce Wayne’s adult life as Harvey Dent is asking for his help to get him elected District Attorney. While on patrol, Batman runs into a certain woman of the cat persuasion for the first time. During this encounter, there was another action scene but this one had a much quicker pace than compared to Batman subduing common criminals.
During the first action scene, I didn’t know if Batman was going to work because every attack felt slow and deliberate. However, during the Catwoman battle, my mind was put at ease because the attacks were quicker and gave less reaction time for you to decide what attacks to use. Additionally, there is a new attack combo system for the Action scenes so that will help progress the activity even more!
Storytelling is key for the Telltale games and Batman appears to be no different. How you answer certain questions or react to certain events will progress the story. How these actions will affect Batman or Bruce or anyone else involved is still a mystery.
How you make Harvey Dent feel during the D.A. campaign could make Batman’s life hell during a crime or a fight! The writing helps the story telling, as well as humor. You don’t really think of the Batman series being humorous but the one-liners and the relationship between Harvey and Bruce was entertaining.
It will be interesting to see the relationships between Bruce and Harvey and Batman and Catwoman progress and just how Telltale games is going to help them along, either in the right or wrong direction. What I mean by that is what extra elements will they add to ruin or foster these relationships. Mob boss Falcone is already a variable in the relationship of Harvey and Bruce.
From what was shown of Batman, there’s a lot to get excited about. It will be interesting to see what other classic Batman characters get added to the story or what other variables are added to mess with the characters.
You get to fulfill the American dream, being Batman. Luckily, you have Alfred to help you out!
