See what the Bethesda Booth at Pax East is all about!
During this year’s Pax East in Boston, I was able to get a tour/demo time in the Bethesda booth. Bethesda was showing off Quake Champions, The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind, and The Elder Scrolls: Legends. Each game has a different style of play so let’s get right to it.
First up was the Quake Champions demo, complete with the Quake t-shirt Bethesda was giving out for playing the demo. For those who don’t know, Quake is a first person shooter game where at Pax East, you were a part of a Red team versus Blue team battle to the death.
Controls are pretty straight forward for a PC first person shooter where the mouse controls the majority of your weapons and the W, A, S, D, keys control movement. If you aren’t familiar with PC gaming, this isn’t going to be the game for you. Graphically Quake Champions looks and sounds fantastic. If you’re quick and crafty you can sneak up on your opponent and take them down without them even knowing you’re there.
The only issue I had was it was hard to tell who was on what team. The Red team markers and Blue team markers on each playable character could have been easier to see but that was the only real issue, nothing really to complain about as in terms of gameplay.
Next up was the first of two Elder Scrolls games, The Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind. Morrowind gave you the choice of playing with an Xbox One controller or the computer mouse and keyboard. Since I’m way more comfortable with the controller, that’s the way I went for this game.
The demo took you to the player versus player Battlegrounds mode where it was “tribe versus tribe versus tribe.”( I guess that’s a good way of putting it) Controls were pretty straightforward for your character and for this game, as compared to Quake; it was easy to tell what team you were on. You fight and kill until you can’t fight anymore.
You’ll be able to claim the spoils of battle after the fight so try your best to survive as long as you can. You can attack by using special attacks or normal but there was another attack that was pretty badass. I guess it could be considered a special attack but you summon a bear/bear-like creature to attack and fight alongside/for you. This attack is probably one of the cooler attacks I’ve seen in a game like this.
Lastly, I was able to play the demo for The Elder Scrolls: Legends. Legends is a competitive digital card game that is filled with strategy. You will need to be on your guard every match because you never know how it will turn out. There is a story mode in Legends, where the full version of the game starts but the demo was all about matches. You’ll be able to play against online opponents as well as computer controller opponents so test you skills against the compute to get really good and then jump into online play.
One of the Bethesda staffers was telling me he jumped right into online play without putting too much time into the game before hand and that was a big mistake. Learn the basics and gain some skill/experience first before the online play. You’ll learn the basics of battles and how to defend the battlefield/lanes of battle. You’re trying to knock your opponent ‘s health down to zero like a typical card game.
You can play creatures, spells and equip cards to help strengthen your team of monsters. Sitting down to play the game, if you’re familiar with card games, it will feel like riding a bike, you never forget how it works. It had been sometime since I have played a card game and it only took a few turns to get back in the zone, the game is that simple to pick up and play right from the start!
