A new service patented by Sony may allow old games to recieve new content.
A patent filed by Sony back in June, 2012 for something called “PlayStation Remix” has officially been published as of today and it looks like it will involve Gaikai’s plan to stream older PlayStation titles to the PlayStation 4.
The “Remix” in the patent’s title is more than just an eye-catching title however. According to the patent’s description, PlayStation Remix will not only emulate older games through cloud streaming, it will also allow developers to add in new content to the older games:
“The present disclosure is related to video game emulation. Among other things, this application describes a method and apparatus for emulating a video game that includes generating snapshots that can be used for incorporating new content into the emulated video games.”
If we’re reading this correctly, it means that players will not only be able to relive the glory of past PlayStation classics, they might be able to experience them in entirely new ways. Naturally if this was the case it would be up to the individual developers and the cloud-based format means an active internet connection would be required to access any new content. What sort of new content would be added is up to speculation at this point but I’m sure many gamers minds are already buzzing with possibilities.
