Super Smash Bros. fans hoping for a Spring, 2014 release date might want to brace themselves for some bad news.

Rumors cropped up a few days ago alluding that the upcoming Nintendo Wii U and 3DS crossover Super Smash Bros. game would be in gamers’ hands as early as Spring, 2014. Unfortunately, the game’s director has now debunked said rumors.

According to Super Smash Bros. lead game director Masahiro Sakurai, the game will be released sometime in 2014 but the rumored Spring timeframe window is in fact false. Sakurai made the announcement via Twitter this morning. His post was in Japanese but, when translated, revealed that he himself had never mentioned a Spring, 2014 release date and that the rumors had likely been started by desperate fans who had heard from unreliable sources.

Aside from debunking rumors, Sakurai has remained pretty tight-lipped regarding gameplay details for the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game. What is known is that the game will be released on both the Wii U and the 3DS (though there won’t be any cross-platform multiplayer due to the unique features and mechanics of each version) and will star, as per usual, a varied cast of characters including returning favorites like Mario, Link, Peach, and Samus as well as newcomers such as Mega Man and the Animal Crossing Villager.

Hopefully Sakurai will have more details to share regarding the game’s different modes and extra features as we move into early 2014. It’s anyone’s guess at this point over when exactly the new Super Smash Bros. will finally be released but at least we no longer have to cling to the false hope of a Spring release date.
