Feel the rush!
I received a review copy of WRC 6 from Bandai Namco and I decided that I would give the official game of the FIA World Rally Championship a shot. Let’s get right into it; there’s a lot to cover. When WRC 6 starts, you get put into a semi tutorial mode where the game asks you if this is the first time you have played one of these games and do you play these games often, for example.
Then it goes into minor detail on the controls of the game and the basics of the game such as how to drive and how to interact with the radio/communications in the car. There were times where it was hard to understand what was being said over the radio in the car but that was because of the accent of the voice, not because of the sound quality.
In addition to the realism of the sounds, the graphics look great. The cars and the locations look authentic and are based off of real events. The teams are official so they’re the real deal too! There were courses with night driving with the mechanics of terrible visibility was spot on. The physics of the game were pretty good as I said with night-time driving being really tough and it was really hard to stop on a dime and make really sharp turns quickly.
However, I mentioned that the physics of the game were pretty good, the controls could have been a bit tighter. There were times where I was pressing the break with plenty of time to drift and I would slide out of control. There were other times when I would want to back up and the controls would take a minute or two to respond. In a game where every second is key like it is in a racing game, you can’t lose presious seconds!
There are various modes to play such as solo mode, multiplayer mode, Esports mode and Shakedown mode. The different modes have you performing different tasks like starting your career and continuing it in solo mode. Esports mode allows you to you take on the best the world has to offer in the eSports WRC Championships. Shakedown mode ups the anti by making it tougher for you to finish the race without damaging your sweet ride!
Like in most racing games, you have the option to change the camera angle and one of the angles is inside the car. Changing the camera angle for beginners might be a bad idea because it makes driving that much more difficult but if you’re a season pro by all means. The game will also throw challenges out at you during the race such as other racers having engine trouble or accidents or you having the same engine trouble or accidents. One of the more common issues was having to replace the tires and that costs you about thirty seconds. That thirty seconds will come back to bite you in the end so try to avoid having to change your tires in the long run.
As I mentioned before Solo mode allows you to start a career and thusly allows you to join a driving team. You start out at the bottom of the ranks and work your way up. Do you have what it takes to be the best driver? Speaking of drivers, this felt like a good place to mention that multiplayer mode can support up to 8 players both on and offline. The game also has online leaderboards so you can show off to your friends just who the best driver really is!
To recap, WRC 6 is the official game of the FIA World Rally Championship and it plays like a world championship game. What I mean by that is the locales are based on real locations and look and sound fantastic. The controls could have been a little tighter and the voice acting could have been a little easier to understand. It’s these reasons that I’m giving WRC 6 for the PlayStation 4 a 7.0/10. I would like to thank Bandai Namco for the review copy.
