Crytek founder makes a strong statement on the PS4's capabilities
With the launch of the next generation consoles looming near, one of the major selling points of Sony's PS4 is its supposed powerful GPU. The PS4's key points are two fold; a very fast GDDR5 RAM and a reportedly powerful GPU. Will multiplatform games take advantage of a powerful GPU? CEO, founder and president of Crytek Cevat Yerli put his two cents on this issue.
“GPU compute is definitely the future. The CPU performance is better than last-gen but not by a huge margin, the GPU on the other hand is a really sizeable improvement. If the task is suited to it, moving to the GPU can be an incredible performance win. However, this is taking away performance from the traditional graphics pipeline so there is a limit to what you can move to the GPU.
As for the broader multi-platform question, supporting GPU compute isn’t really much more difficult than supporting multi-platform rendering, so it’s certainly something we’ll be using more and more on all platforms,”
The best thing I can say on this issue is that time will tell. By the time we get further into the PS4 cycle, perhaps when we start seeing 2nd generation games, then we can can truly see how developers will take advantage of the GPU.
