The push for android-based console gaming is coming to a head next month with the release of the Kickstarter-funded GameStick.

First there was the Ouya, now gamers who want a thrifty android-based console have another option to consider with the GameStick; a console that consists of nothing more than a controller and a thumb drive-sized device that can plug into any television with an HDMI port.

The GameStick, much like the Ouya, is the product of a successfully Kickstarter campaign which managed to raise over $647,658; quite an impressive feat considering the developer’s original goal was only $100,000. The console is set to hit retail on September 30th and will cost $79, an even more affordable (and portable) option than the $99 Ouya.

It will be interesting to see how the GameStick fares, especially considering the lukewarm reception Ouya received when it was finally released to the public. Many who got to preview the GameStick found the controller to be a bit uncomfortable to hold but a slightly awkward grip is no doubt favorable to buttons that constantly stick (something the Ouya’s controller suffered from even after launch).

GameStick Kickstarter backers will most likely receive their consoles before the official launch date so if you’re interested, stay tuned to see what they think before you buy.
