Ubisoft has confirmed that PvP in The Division will not be optional and will be a core part of the seamless online experience,

The E3 reveal trailer for Ubisoft’s upcoming open-world online apocalyptic shooter The Division closed out with a seamless transition from PvE party-based exploration into a full-on competitive deathmatch between the featured party of players and another group of players who tried to get the drop on them. According to some new info from Ubisoft, such situations will be a mandatory part of the experience.

In a new post on the developer’s UbiBlog, The Division’s lead game director Ryan Barnard answered some burning fan questions about the game and he confirmed that The Division will not have separate single-player/cooperative multiplayer/competitive multiplayer components. Instead, the entire gameplay experience will be seamless with PvE activities being able to shift into a PvP situation at any time.

Barnard explained in the UbiBlog post why he and the team chose to make PvP conflict a required part of the experience: "We wanted to integrate it into the storyline and add an element of mystery, so you don’t know who is a friend and who is an enemy." Such a decision will certainly help ratchet up The Division’s tension and immersion but it might be a little frustrating for newer players or players who simply want to roam around and explore either alone or with friends.

Barnard’s UbiBlog post (which can be read in its entirety at the link below) follows closely on the heels of Ubisoft’s previous announcement that, in addition to next-gen consoles, The Division will also be coming to PC when it releases in late 2014. In the meantime, stay tuned for more info on Ubisoft’s ambitious new foray into next-gen open-world gaming.
