Fable Legends is just the beginning of a new studio focus on online-multiplayer games according to Lionhead.
Lionhead Studios made some waves at this year’s Gamescom when they unveiled their new upcoming game Fable Legends; an online-multiplayer adventure title set within the Fable universe. However, it would seem Fable Legends is just the beginning of the studio’s new focus on connecting players through online capabilities; something they want to put in all of their future games.
Lionhead head of studio John Needham confirmed the studio’s new focus during an interview at Gamescom: "Our vision is to connect players with fantastic games, so every game we do from here on out will have great connected online layers." Needham went on to say that it only made sense to begin this new focus with a Fable game since that is what the studio is best known for: "We're online game guys, that's the studio. We love online games, we love interaction with real people, and we want to bring that magic to Fable."
Needham also talked a bit about how Fable Legends’ unique take on multiplayer, which allows players to either adventure alongside their friends or play as the dastardly villain and try to defeat the party of adventurers with waves of monsters, was inspired by other games that aimed to reinvent what multiplayer could mean to players: "It's a combination of things; we're inspired by games like Journey and Dark Souls, which have these really innovative online modes."
While Fable Legends’ multiplayer-focused premise certainly seems ambitious, it sounds like Needham and the rest of the Lionhead team are committed to the studio’s new focus and are working hard to bring the Fable universe into the next generation of gaming with a bang. We’ll have to wait until next year’s planned beta to see the game in action but in the meantime it’s nice to know that one of Lionhead’s chief goals is bringing players together.
