PlayStation 4 players will be able to pay a small fee to upgrade their current-gen PS3 games to next-gen.
During their Gamescom press conference yesterday, Sony announced that fans who want to trade up from the PlayStation 3 version of a game to the next-gen PlayStation 4 version can do so at a vastly reduced price.
Similar to what Microsoft is doing with the Xbox One, Sony has confirmed that, at launch, players will be able to purchase big-name titles like Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV, Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4 for the PS3 and, if they happen to get their hands on a PS4 soon after, will be able to “trade up” to the PS4 version for a measly $10. No word yet on whether or not other cross-gen games will be eligible for this offer as well but considering Sony’s drive to make and keep fans happy, the odds are favorable.
One important question Sony has yet to answer however is whether or not save data will be transferable between current and next-gen versions of a game. Prettier graphics are all well and good but I doubt many gamers would be willing to sacrifice all their game progress for them; especially if they’ve already poured several hours into the game’s current-gen version.
We’ll have to wait and see how both Microsoft and Sony handle this tricky little issue but in the meantime it’s nice to know we won’t have to be shelling out too much extra cash in order to upgrade our game libraries to next-gen.
