The legendary Nintendo developer spoke candidly with Japanese gaming site 4Gamer about the forays he and Nintendo made into developing a handheld Pikmin game for the DS and 3DS and why they eventually decided to scrap the project:
"The truth is we were doing prototype tests of Pikmin for the DS and 3DS but it turned into unit management with only the touch pen and no matter what it just didn't seem like Pikmin."
Miyamoto went on to say that one of the most important elements of the Pikmin series is ease of control and, according to him, there was just no way that the series could be ported to handheld systems without eliminating that crucial element.
For now, the closest Pikmin fans will get to playing a handheld version of Pikmin will be on the Wii U’s GamePad when Pikmin 3 launches for the Wii U on August 4.
