The new Wii U/3DS Super Smash Bros. game won't have a story mode, but Nintendo is making it up to players in other ways.

Fans of the Subspace Emissary adventure mode from Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be disappointed to hear that no such mode will be featured in the upcoming Wii U/3DS Super Smash game. However, series creator Masahiro Sakurai has good reasoning as to why the mode won’t be returning.

According to Sakurai, building a custom-tailored story mode that featured many different characters from many different worlds unsurprisingly took a lot of time and a lot of effort. However, as was want to happen, all that time, energy, and effort was rendered virtually useless soon after the game’s release:

"Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I've decided against having them." Sakurai wrote in his bi-weekly Famitsu column.

For the new Wii U/3DS game, Sakurai and his team are focusing instead on cutscenes and videos that they actually *want* to be spread around and shared, such as the above video showcasing some of the new characters and their attacks. In addition to the standard arcade and versus modes, Sakurai also confirmed that the 3DS version will have some sort of extra mode which will "act as a separate mode from the standard versus play" (whatever that could mean).

The column also mentioned that, for the first time in a Super Smash game, there will be some form of character customization. Sakurai remained coy on how exactly characters could be customized other than to say players will be able to alter character performance in some way. He also mentioned that allowing players to transfer customizations from the 3DS version into the Wii U version is also being considered.
