Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be the last Castlevania game we see from MercurySteam but not necessarily the last Castlevania game we'll ever see period.

Despite being one of the most anticipated games of 2013, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be the last Castlevania game to be developed by MercurySteam according to producer David Cox.

MercurySteam was also responsible for the original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow as well as the 3DS entry Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate. During an interview at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, David Cox confirmed that, after Lords of Shadow 2 is released, MercurySteam will be stepping away from the Castlevania franchise in order to pursue new projects set in other universes:

When I said we are done with Castlevania, it's because we want to move forward with MercurySteam on a new project in a new universe!  Why???

— Dave Cox (@CastlevaniaLOS) July 23, 2013

However, Cox also had some comforting words regarding the fate of the Castlevania series:

What happens with Castlevania after LOS is not clear but we hope to leave it in the best of health for those who come after us.

— Dave Cox (@CastlevaniaLOS) July 23, 2013

It may be a while before we see a new Castlevania game following Lords of Shadow 2, but it is nice to know that Cox and the rest of the MercurySteam studio want to respect the Castlevania IP by moving on when they feel the time is right.
