Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One Killer Instinct game will have a free-to-play payment model.
Developer Double Helix had a huge surprise for fighting game fans during this year’s E3 Microsoft conference: the return of the beloved Killer Instinct franchise. Now it’s been announced that the Xbox One exclusive will also have a free-to-play payment model as well as standard full-package price tag.
Now before you start brushing up on your Sabrewulf skills you should know that the game’s F2P version comes with a caveat. The only character available for play in the F2P version will be Jago. Unlike other F2P games which feature a rotating roster of free characters (such as League of Legends), Killer Instinct’s F2P version will only ever offer Jago with other characters available as separate purchases.
This restriction makes the F2P version of Killer Instinct extremely unappealing to hardcore fighting game fans who often stress the importance of trying several characters out before settling on a preferred or “main” character. While the F2P version may be a nice concept in theory, the extreme limitations that come with it probably won’t appeal to anyone outside of the occasional casual player.
