Microsoft and 343 Industries have officially unveiled Halo: Spartan Assault for Windows 8 devices.

The domain name Microsoft was revealed to have registered earlier this month has now been officially unveiled by developer 343 Industries as a new mobile game titled Halo: Spartan Assault.

Set to be released on all Windows 8 devices (PC’s, tablets, and phones) sometime in July, Spartan Assault is a top-down twin-stick shooter that takes place between Halo 3 and 4 and features 25 campaign missions. The story of Spartan Assault focuses on the origins of Spartan Commander Sarah Palmer and the founding of the Spartan Ops program. Players will be able to play as either Palmer or her comrade Spartan Davis as they blast through hordes of Covenent forces using customized weapon and armor loadouts.

The entire narrative framework is based around the idea that the game is a training tool of sorts; allowing prospective soldiers to relive some of the most pivotal UNSC conflicts through the eyes of both Palmer and Davis. In-between missions, players will get to watch cinematic motion comics that will help explain the origins behind each mission and how they tie into the fledging Spartan Ops program.

Halo 4 players are in for a treat as well since they’ll be able to link their Halo 4 profiles to Spartan Assault using Halo Waypoint and earn exclusive achievements, emblems, and experience rewards for playing through Spartan Assault. 343 has also confirmed that they will add wired Xbox 360 controller support with a post-launch update which also means the prospect of seeing an XBLA release of Spartan Assault isn’t entirely off the table either.

Halo: Spartan Assault will be available in July for all Windows 8 devices and will cost $6.99. If you’re the kind of gamer who just can’t get enough Halo, this looks like a game you won’t want to miss.
