It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time we're looking at Clockwork Ambrosia on Steam. I played the Steam demo when it came out and liked it. Fans of Metroidvania games will want to check this one out!
At the start of the journey, we get attacked by a robot dragon monster. We get shot down and crash land at the loading dock of Aspida Spires. Iris's vacation got off to a rocky start! I love the character designs in this game as it looks like a time/effort went into them.
Along the way, you'll find different weapons to use. You'll have to figure out the best strategy for your play-style and match skills accordingly. You'll also find glowing blue squares strewn about that will act as your save area. These locations will also heal your HP so try and find them. I found it helpful to attack/kill pretty much everything I came across so I could get more supplies/currency/items. You'll have the ability to upgrade weapons/items/skills when you get to a location that allows it and you won't want to be short on funds.
As I mentioned prior, you'll have to figure out your ideal playing style. I found weapons that charged and had bullets that passed through enemies were a good combo. But that's the fun part about games like this. Find a style you like and go with it.
In Metroidvania games, you'll find new skills that will let you progress in the journey. Early on, you'll find a wall jump, similar to the skill in Mega Man X, as well as a dash maneuver. I always like when Metroidvanias give you the wall jump/dash early on so thanks for that. It felt like the wall jump was a little sticky when I tried to jump and turn quickly. It would feel like I was able to jump and then stop right after using it. There were times when I would turn the wrong way as well. I noticed this in the demo version as well but chalked it up to the demo. There was a boss fight in the mines that was very challenging in the demo. It was great to see the boss was super tough in the demo and easy to deal with in the full game.
I really like the first hub city you come across in the game too. You find new characters to interact with, stores to purchase things from, and many more things. Check out all the stores to get new items as well as upgrade skills/armor/etc. You can also talk with characters to figure out where to go next as well as gather more backstory on the story.
I have taken a liking to Metroidvania games and have to recommend Clockwork Ambrosia. I'd like to thank the devs for a review code.
