It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time we're looking at Neon Inferno on Steam. For the video, I played the Steam version but it also out on the Nintendo Switch.
Let me start out by saying fans of Wild Guns or Sunset Riders will want to check out Neon Inferno. I compare it to games like that because there is all kinds of action, both in the foreground as well as the background. You'll have to do your best to dodge all kinds of bullets/firepower and shoot the appropriate areas.
You have the option to play as Angelo or Mariana. I think we all know the reason why I picked Mariana for the playthrough.(She's hot!) We are the righthand man/woman of the mafia and we have been tasked with taking care of their dirty laundry. If you haven't figured it out, we have to do some killing for the mob. The game has some of the best sprite work I've even seen so I'm ok doing the grunt work for the mafia. There is a tutorial section before you jump into gameplay and I would recommend doing it. The game also suggests that you do the tutorial so you can get the hang of things. In said tutorial, you'll learn the basics from attacks to how to defend. You'll also learn how to deflect green bullets and how to aim them back. This will be a vital attack so make sure you learn how to use it.
There are three modes to pick from, Hard, Medium, and Novice. I went with Medium for the playthrough but it was still pretty challenging. You get thrown into the first mission and after completing it, you can pick from three new missions in any order. I mentioned before that there are foreground attacks and background attacks. In highway portions you switch lanes and you have to aim accordingly. Having foreground/background lane changing is one of the cooler things I've seen in a game like this. In a later level you ride a jet ski and switch between the front and back of the waves.(also pretty cool) You have a dodge roll as well as a double jump. At times, the controls could have been a little tighter in terms of the double jump not going off right away and timing a roll. There were a couple of times where I pushed the direction to shoot and the character never turned. It doesn't ruin the game but just be aware of things.
The levels are pretty long but luckily you have checkpoints in your arsenal. You only get one life so you'll be glad you have checkpoints. You also get paid for your work and you can buy something before you go into the next level. You can only have one item equipped at a time, but you can discard the item in the shop. You might discover you like the rapid fire, or the homing bullets so experiment and find the ones you like best.
