It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time we're looking at Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game is also available on Steam but we're playing it on Switch 2.
Puzzle Quest shows off the answer to the age-old question: Can you solve every problem by matching like symbols? Don't give me that look, everyone I know asks that question at least twice a day. At the start of the game, you have to select your faction/tribe. This will determine what attacks/skills you have throughout the journey. There are a lot to pick from, and I went with Knight for my playthrough. The game allows you to pick a design for your character from a preset group as well as name them. The name can be something you come up with or random. In this instance, like I have done in the past, went with Stevie, for obvious reasons. I really like the way the games looks as it adds to the charm.
I would recommend playing the tutorial mode, so you get the feel of the game. The game gives you the option before you start the journey, so you have the option. I say play the tutorial, so you understand how attacks/spells work and how battles work. Long story short, you will match tiles in battle to do anything. That could range from attacks, spells and more. You'll be able to collect more titles as attacks usually cost more than three. You can also match more to add combos to your skills. You might be able to get more of a certain symbol if you match more or attack right away for example. Win battles to gain experience points to level up your character and skills. Completing quests will also give you rewards. Most of the time, those are experience points and those will help you level up quicker.
The game has a Dungeons and Dragons feel to it, especially when you move from location to location on the map. You'll get a description of what's going on, similar to a storyteller telling said story. Leveling up is key because you'll learn new skills and grow as a character. Pick to upgrade the best for the type of character you're playing as. I mentioned prior that leveling up will be key because you'll want to have the best chance to win battles as well as doing large amounts of damage when you do. There is also a chance that the enemy goes first in battle because you don't have the skills top match up. There will be plenty of times for you to gain experience on your journey so be prepared to fight. You'll also be able to buy better equipment so the more gold you have, the better stuff you can buy. You gain gold by winning fights and completing quests. When leveling up skills/spells, the game will give you option to do it, sort of like a last chance to do it.
Equipment will make things easier for you. You might gain the extra damage to win a fight, or you might get more amour to survive a fight. However, you will have to be a certain symbol level as well as have enough gold to make said purchase. Another reason to make sure you level up enough. You can also go to the Tavern to learn more about the location you happen to be in, the shop to buy goods, or new quests. You can also go to the Citadel to better your character build. You will want to level up the Citadel because you might get the advantage in battle from learning a new spell or having morale boosted from the upgrades in the Citadel.
Puzzle Quest has a deep RPG system, one that you might to expect from a match three symbols puzzle game. I love the way the game looks and sounds/ Fans of the puzzle genre should take a look at it.
