Chichuki Plays The Girl From Arkanya

It's that time again for a new episode of Chichuki Plays, the show where I go hands-on with upcoming games and show them off. Usually, it's about an hour or so but I don't want to spoil too much of the game for you. This time, we're looking at The Girl From Arkanya on Steam. Fans of old school games like The Legend of Zelda will want to try this one out.

Amazonia is in trouble and it's up to you to save it. How do we do that? You play the role of Marisa on her quest to save the day. Marisa is a treasure hunter so she doesn't mind going on a quest to save the world. You start out by looking for your good friend, Ari. But you don't know that a bigger threat will rear its ugly head when you eventually find your friend in the jungle. Xolotl, the demon, is trying to destroy the world and disrupt the seals of Mara. In the past, Mara led the band of maidens that saved Amazonia. Xolotl wants to revive the demon, Quetzalcoatl, and it's up to us to stop him.

Along the way you'll run into Kapi, the Capybara, and he'll help you on your mission. Kapi is like your spirit animal. He'll help you on your quest by any means. You can control both him and Marisa during gameplay. You'll be able to take control of one character and then tell them what to do. If you need to be on one side of the room to hit a switch and then walk through a door, you can tell Kapi to go to one side and Marisa on the other. You can tell teleport one character to the other and get through the timed gate/door. It's an interesting mechanic and a good comparison could be the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker where you needed to guide sages through dungeons and could take control of them.

Ari teaches you a Shaman dance that has mysterious powers. Kapi isn't too happy that she taught Marisa the dance but it will help us down the road. You'll be able to activate fast travel spots as well as activate dungeon doors/other doors. You'll also learn new skills from others in the world so keep an eye out for them. You'll also be able to upgrade inventory slots and other skills to make the journey easier. Make sure you have plenty of cheese and beer on you at all times. You heard me right, the cheese can heal hit points and the beer is like a Zelda fairy where you'll have your health filled if you perish.

One of the cooler weapons is the grappling hook you find in one of the dungeons. It can hook onto different things like pots/jars/wood just like in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I am a big Legend of Zelda fan and The Girl from Arkanya feels like a love letter to the series and does a great job with it.
