It’s no surprise that I’m a huge Hockey fan and love to play hockey video games. The best Hockey game of all time is NHL 94 so whenever a game comes around that makes me think of NHL 94, it get me going. Tape To Tape is that game and you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t pick this game up.
I remember seeing Tape To Tape for the very first time in the Shacknews Indie Showcase presentation when E3 wasn’t going to happen. For those who don’t know, Tape To Tape is a Hockey roguelite where you can build the best Hockey team by winning games, claiming players, and grabbing items/power ups. One of the coolest features is the playing against the referee team who doubles as a boss battle.
I was looking for new information at PAX East this year and got just what I was looking for. I wanted to hear the game was coming to Nintendo Switch. The game is planned for consoles so that makes so happy. I might become a Tape To Tape live streamer when this game comes to Switch. There is also a create your own team mode, a create your own player mode and so much more coming to the game in a “roadmap” to players. The create your own mode sounds really interesting because you can use your own images at center ice for your team. You can also go nuts in terms of making your player just the way you want.
The Null Games team was showing multiplayer mode at the convention but they did also show off an interesting new team, the soccer players. The soccer players will kick the puck with their feet and play on a grass field. I also found out the Null Games folks don’t like soccer too much and made this team as a joke to show how much they hate soccer.
I mentioned that Tape To Tape feels like a modern take on NHL 94. I feel this way because of all the memories I have playing NHL 94 with my brother. There were two ways I could score a goal when I was younger, a one timer or a NHL failsafe of cutting across the net mouth. I feel so at home playing Tape To Tape it’s scary. That being said I would have liked the ability to poke check while playing defense but that’s my only knock on the game.
I’d like to just mention that I had the developer start our match by asking if he should go easy on me or all out. I was down 2 to 1 at the time and told him to go all out. I proceeded to score seven out of the next eight goals and win convincingly 8 to 3. It was his first loss of the convention so take it from me, Hockey fans and fans of good games will love Tape To Tape.
Go Devils!
