PAX East 2023:Hands-On With Trinity Fusion

At PAX East this year, I was able to get some hands-on time Trinity Fusion. This rogue-lite game takes place in the multiverse. Fast paced action as well as quick enemies will keep you on your toes during exploration.

That being said, you play as one of the main characters parallel selves with their goal of trying to save the multiverse. The world is never the same and you’ll find out quick that could be a good thing or a bad thing. You might have felt like you got lucky with one set up and then have to restart it and then it’s really tough. You’ll find weapons and equipment as you progress in the journey.

You might get lucky and find a stronger weapon or a weapon with better abilities. You don’t have to change weapons but from the demo, it felt like more often than not, you would find a weapon that was stronger than the weapon you had currently. Now that could just be the demo trying to make things easier for you but it didn’t feel like that. It felt like the more weapons you picked up, the better the chance of finding better weapons was. You'll also be able to find health drops throughout the adventure. There will be objectives for you to complete as well like beating a certain number of enemies or kill a certain number of enemies with normal attacks. These objectives will reward the player as well as add to the replay value as you don't really know what objectives you'll have.

You’ll have to be quick on your feet to dodge enemy attacks but it turns out you have a wide array of attacks/skills to use. You’ll be able to dash and slide to dodge bullets and attacks. I found myself leaning toward quick attacks and weapons so I was always on the move.

Your character has parallel selves and each one of those has different locations and abilities at their disposal. For example one moves faster than the others whereas another uses ranged attacks. On the plus side, during playthrough you’ll find several teleportation pods that will allow for fast travel. The world is massive and you’ll want to backtrack at times to get things that you couldn’t get when you first saw them.

You’ll have the option to find permanent upgrades as you adventure which is always nice for games that have you restart your journey every time you die. That being said, you’ll also find new starting points as well. It is nice to be able to start in one location and die and then jump into another and progress in that one.

During the demo, I was finding out just how big each location was. It felt like I was making zero progress and was stumbling into each new location. It turns out that finding new locations and teleportation spots is progress after all.

Also during the demo, I fought three bosses that you can find in different biomes. Each parallel self had a different boss fight to conquer. I won’t spoil the boss fights for you but each one was tough in their own way. If you don’t have the abilities and skills of your character down, the boss fights are going to be a challenge.
