It wouldn’t be a trip to the Penny Arcade Expo without stopping by the XSEED Games booth. The XSEED Games booth brought quite a few games with them to Boston for PAX East but there are two that really caught my eye. They both have role-playing game elements built into them. Let’s take a look at Trinity Trigger and Cuisineer.
The first game I want to take a look at from XSEED Games is Trinity Trigger. Fans of classic role-playing games will definitely want to give this game a look. Your party will consist of Cyan, Elise, and Zantis as they try to save Trinitia from certain doom. You’ll be able to build up and better your weapons over time. You’ll also have to figure out what Trigger is the best for your fighting style. The travel companions of the party are Triggers and they can transform into eight different types of weapons. You’ll be able to switch between the three party members as often as you’d like or grab two of your friends and fight monsters in local co-op.
You’ll be able to traverse different dungeons/locations to find all kinds of supplies/items. These supplies can be used to craft better weapons/wares so you’ll be able to survive exploration. During the PAX East demo, my party was in a location that looked like a frozen mountain range. There will all kinds of biomes to explore and there will be plenty of secrets to discover in those biomes as well.
Find out which weapon does the most damage during battle and quickly change to it with the help of weapon wheel. There will be all kinds of monster fights so you’ll have to think on the fly to perform high damaging combos. Again, during the demo, we found a bow and arrow set and that was great for range attacks but when we got to the boss fight, we had to switch back to the lance for close combat. It’s going to be interesting to see just how many different boss fights there will be as well as how many weapon combos our party can make.
The action in the dungeons comes at the players quickly. That being said, you will need to have plenty of rations on hand, such as potions. Fighting monsters in the dungeons is very smooth. Quick actions allowed you to set up combo attacks as well as dodge enemy attacks too.
The other game that caught my attention during PAX East from XSEED was Cuisineer. Pom, the main character in the game, has become the owner of her parents’ restaurant; complete with the debt her deadbeat parents left her. We’re going to learn quickly how to run an eatery by going out and collecting everything you need to reopen the family restaurant.
The game is a roguelike where the different biomes will be different every time you explore. Pom will have different weapons and special attacks at her disposal during exploration. During the demo, we took down plenty of chickens and collected their meat. It wasn’t just chickens that were attacking in the forest, there were peppers breathing fire and boars charging at us. There are all kinds of meals that Pom will have to learn how to make and find the ingredients during adventures. There are items that you can find while exploring that people in the town will want and buy off you so keep an eye out for them.
You will have to build up your eatery so more people will want to come. That being said, you will have to craft all kinds of things for your restaurant. From seats and tables, there will have to be plenty of spots for people to eat if you want the place to become the hot spot in town. The combat while in the biomes took a little bit of getting used to but once I switched my plate throwing and spatula buttons around, I was beating up animals so much better. The way I was flipping my spatula, you’d think I was SpongeBob flipping Krabby Patties!
