PAX East 2022 Hands On With Thunderful

I was able to set up time with Thunderful to see their booth during PAX East. Thunderful has games that go in a different direction than the norm and that’s a good thing. Two games at the booth caught my attention so let’s get to it!

First up was a Golf game called Cursed to Golf where you have to Golf to get out of purgatory. You’ll have to study each hole so you can sink the shot in the number of putts/shots allowed. If you don’t you lose the hole and your life. However, there are plenty of ways to make things easier for you during gameplay. You can get your hands on special skills that allow you to perform actions like practice a hole or blow up dynamite on the green.

The holes are long so you will have to make good use of all the extra items you have to survive. Switching clubs is another way you can make things easier for you. The better a drive is at the start, the better chance you have to survive the hole. That being said, mastering the putter and wedge will be key to victory as well. If you can line up a wedge shot closer to the hole, you might be able to save a stroke and that could be the difference between life and death. You’ll be able to buy different cards at the Pro Shop to help make the next hole easier. There are boss battles as well and you won’t want to lose a hole. If you do, you’ll have to start back at the first hole.

The other game might be one of the coolest concepts for a game I’ve seen in quite some time. The Last Hero of Nostalgia is a game that plays like a classic souls-like game. The only catch is the game takes place in a video game like world that is being corrupted by glitches/falling into pixelated hell. This is a neat idea and I love that my character looked like hangman during the demo build. You’ll be able to find different weapons to fight enemies with such as an axe and sword.

You can also find different items to make gameplay easier. You’ll have to keep an eye on health, as you will take damage. If you don’t keep an eye on health, you will die quickly. The game does a great job in showing off how the world is slowing turning back into an old-school looking game. You’ll be able to see the environments decay right in front of your eyes. It will be interesting to see what other weapons you can find during your adventure as well as what old school elements/graphics the game will go with. The Last Hero of Nostalgia is a great idea for a game and I’m looking forward to seeing it in the future.
