Hands On At Pax East 2019: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night

I was able to get some hands on time at the 505 Games booth with their upcoming game, Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night. For those who aren’t aware, Bloodstained is a role playing game set in 18th century England that has platforming/side scrolling features built in as well.

You play as Miriam, an orphan who has been affected by the alchemist’s curse. You’ll have to defeat Gebel the summoner and to do that, you’ll have to find all kinds of equipment and weapons. You’ll be able to create combo attacks by using the special attacks/spells you discover in the castle/areas.

There are various paths in the castle to explore and find all kinds of items and loot. You can find save locations in the castle, which is massive, so make sure you use the save locations to your advantage. You also have the option to customize your attacks so make sure you set your attacks to the way you like them so if you like a special attack that uses lightning or ice, use it! If you like a special attack that attacks multiple targets at once, use it!

During the demo, players were shown the Tower of the Twin Dragons, a new area that was new for Pax East. This area was more about platforming in my opinion compared to other areas that I’ve seen as you needed to make your way through the tower and make tough jumps on gears and cliff sides. You were also given new accessories for your character so what better way to show off the new look than with a pirate hat and eye patch.

There were plenty of costume accessory options but pirate stuff was the perfect way to go for me! The boss at the end of the Tower of Twin Dragons was in fact the Twin Dragons and they were really tough but luckily you get plenty of healing items and special attacks to do some damage to it. I wasn’t able to kill it but was able to learn the attack pattern during the battle. It’s a tough boss battle but it isn’t unfair!

Fans of Metroidvania type games as well as the Castlevania series will want to give Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night a look. It will be releasing for the Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this summer so cool off from the heat with a good game!
