Hands On At Pax East 2019: Treachery In Beatdown City

If you like role-playing games that remind you of Double Dragon and River City Ransom, then have I got the perfect game for you. Treachery In Beatdown City is part RPG, part strategy and all fun! Long story short, the president has been kidnapped by Ninja Dragon terrorists and it’s up to you, a group of three street-smart fighters to save the day to get him back.

Each fighter has different skills at their disposal and those will come in handy during each battle over the course of the adventure. You could choose Lisa, who’s a boxer/MMA fighter, Brad who’s a pro wrestler, or Bruce who specialty is Jeet Kune Do. You’ll have to use your street smarts as you fight on the streets to deal with the swarms of enemies that come your way.

The combat system is a tactical-brawling system where you combine RPG elements of semi-turn based attacks with punches, kicks and various throws/attacks in real time. You’ll also have to deal with debris in the fighting area as well as other people that can come into the area to disrupt the fight. This was really cool as you have deal with joggers and bikers that run and well, bike into the battle. You can punch and kick these enemies out of the way and then you have to deal with the remaining bike/other debris they leave behind.

You’ll also have the ability to attack with weapons and be attacked with weapons during fights. If you’re getting attacked by a weapon, you’ll have the ability to knock it out of the attackers hand and use it against them but like some attacks, they could block it or you could miss. At first, the controls and attack system takes a little getting used to but after you get the hang of things, you’ll be taking thugs down in no time at all! You have an over world map to travel around the city as well as non-playable characters that will help you out. They resemble the Guardian Angles of New York City, who wear red berets, since the game’s location is loosely based on New York City.

Treachery In Beatdown City feels like an old school brawler with a modern RPG twist built into it. You fight street toughs in real time and take down some serious threats to the neighborhood. The boss in the demo was pretty tough but you have plenty of healing items at your disposal. Word of advice, treat the fighting like real fighting and what I mean by that is, after you attack, don’t turn and run. You will get jumped and if you get hit in the back, you take more damage and have to waste a part of your turn turning around to face your opponent.

Do you have what it takes to save the President from ninjas? Take to the streets and use combos and other attacks to find out!
