During Pax East, I was able to get an appointment with the fine folks at 1C Entertainment to see what they have planned for the upcoming year/future. One game in particular caught my attention and that was Devil’s Hunt, which will be released for PC as well as console. The game plays like an old school dungeon crawler, in the sense of a third person perspective, where you will need to explore the surroundings to survive and advance.
Devil’s Hunt tells the story of Desmond, who long story short, becomes Lucifer’s executioner or simply put his puppet. You broker a deal with Lucifer and can decide during the story whether to fight for the light or the dark, for demonic or angelic. Desmond is human but can join the demonic side of the struggle that’s at hand.
You’ll be able to use your fists as well as your claws since Desmond can use attacks from both human and demonic sides. You’ll be able to change forms to get through certain parts of the game as well as taking care of certain enemies. You’ll be able to string combos together that use all the skills you learn over the course of the adventure. You will be able to upgrade skills as your progress by breaking mirrors that you come across in the demonic world. You’ll also be able to search the human world as well. Devil’s Hunt is based off of the Polish fantasy novel, Equilibrium.
Devil’s Hunt reminded me of a simpler version of Dark Souls in terms of control layout and design. The demonic enemies attacked in a similar pattern as the Dark Souls token enemies did and you’d be able to kill them to get helpful things for the journey. The boss at the end of the demo was huge and tough but your special attacks, that replenish after you use them, were the way to defeat the beast.
You’ll have to decide if you’re fighting for the light or the dark in Devil’s Hunt, a decision that doesn’t appear to be too easy. In games like this, fighting for the dark is always more fun but the light is more fulfilling. How will you decide?
